Social media took us by storm by the year 2010. The reason it wasn’t just a hype is because we needed a way for us to socialise without the physical limitation. Recently, we have seen VR revolutionise the way we communicate in the virtual world. However, this might not do it for many people who prefer to stay on the real world. What if social media can build a bridge between both worlds ?
Dropp, a Web 3.0 company is building their own social metaverse app. Dropp does this by acquiring a 3D social network app, Flyy for $25M. Flyy allows you to pin messages on a 3D map for the others to view.
Flyy, a 3D social network app
Aiming to be the first real world social metaverse app, Flyy built a social media on a 3D map. Users could make a post and pin it to a location desired. Users don’t have to be present at the location the post is pinned. Once uploaded, your profile picture will be pinned on a location for others to tap on. A card slides up showing the post you have made when tapped.
Just like other social medias, you can add friends. But the interesting part is viewing your friend’s ‘journey’. This allows you to see their posts and location on the map chronologically. ‘Highlight’ allows you to view recent posts by your friends. As you tap next, Flyy will move through the map showing each post on locations. The Explore page allows you to scroll through publicly available posts.
Flyy was founded in Delaware on May 2018 to create a social network for the people. They thought the best way of doing that is presenting a 3D city that you live in. This was visioned way before Meta, formerly known as Facebook publicise the term ‘metaverse’. They have modelled cities across North America and Europe.
Dropp acquires Flyy for $25M
Dropp first gained its recognition when launching droppTV, an app that allows user to shop while watching a video. It uses AI to detect wearables in video which users can purchase. This was when shopataintment became a thing and was valued at $137B. DroppTV was valued at $300M by Koherent Incoperated.
Dropp’s CEO and co-founder Gurps Rai, wants to build a social metaverse that utilises Augmented Reality. Rai saw Flyy as the solution and acquires it for $25M. In a release shared with ARPost, Adel Al Massarani, founder of Flyy said “I am thrilled to bring Flyy into the Dropp Group portfolio. Collectively, we’re now poised to revolutionize the metaverse and Web3 industries“. Massarani will serve as Chief Metaverse Officer at Dropp.
The potential of Flyy
Flyy is implementing a digital twin for users to socialise on the digital platform. However, the experience limits users to a map. Imagine instead of a map, we can browse through posts as we take a stroll in the city. This is possible using Augmented Reality. Dropp could potentially upgrade Flyy so that we can see these pinned post live at the location. This will bring a whole new experience when reading a post.

The Designium, the creator of Tokyo Time Machine developed an application called Share Notes that allows users to pin messages like Flyy. The difference is Share Notes allow user to view these messages via the camera at the location where it was pinned. Share Notes is a simple project just for demonstration. But this project demonstrates what Flyy could possibly achieve.
